Custom Compostable Mailers: An Ecommerce Guide

Custom compostable mailers are flexible shipping bags made to order for a business. The size, print, artwork placement, closure and material specification are agreed for the project rather than selected from a shelf of pre-printed stock.

For ecommerce brands, the practical appeal is that one piece of packaging can protect suitable products in transit, carry the brand clearly and support a specific compostability claim when the approved material and certification are used. The mailer still has to do its first job well: fit the packed order, close securely and arrive in good condition.

Flexible mailers work best where the product does not need a rigid outer pack. Common examples include garments, textiles, accessories, books, stationery, gifts and other non-fragile goods that can tolerate normal courier handling in a bag.

A mailer should not be forced onto a product that needs crush resistance, structural support or substantial cushioning. Fragile, heavy, sharp or unusually shaped products may need a box, padding or another protective packaging solution. Choosing the lightest-looking option is not useful if it increases damage or returns.

Start with the packed product rather than the empty mailer. Consider the size and shape of a typical order, how much it varies, where labels need to sit, how the team packs it and whether the customer may use the same bag for a return.

A useful brief does not need to solve every production detail. It should give the packaging supplier enough information to recommend a suitable specification and identify any trade-offs before artwork is finalised.

Custom production has setup work that stock packaging does not: the size and construction are confirmed, artwork is prepared, print is set up and material is allocated for the run. A minimum order quantity makes that process commercially workable.

The right order quantity is not automatically the lowest available quantity. Estimate how many mailers you use, how much storage is available, whether the artwork is likely to change and how seasonal peaks affect demand. That gives a more useful ordering decision than choosing a quantity without a realistic usage plan.

MOQ should be confirmed with the complete specification. A change in dimensions, print or material can change the production requirement, so the 2,000-unit starting point should not be treated as a universal promise for every mailer design or other type of packaging.

All packaging marketed and sold by Zero Pack as compostable is certified compostable packaging. The exact standard or certification scheme depends on the material and product specification being supplied.

For applicable certified custom compostable mailer materials, available certification can include AS 5810 and OK compost HOME for home compostability, or AS 4736 and OK compost INDUSTRIAL for industrial or commercial compostability. These claims are not interchangeable. The mark, claim and disposal wording on the mailer should all match the evidence for the exact material.

Certification does not guarantee that every household compost system, council collection or commercial facility will accept or successfully process the packaging. Customer instructions should describe the supported pathway accurately and, where a local collection service is involved, tell people to check whether the item is accepted.

Good mailer artwork starts with the information the customer needs to see, not with filling every available area. Brand recognition, legibility, label placement, certification marks and disposal instructions all need space to work together.

Provide vector artwork where possible, along with brand colour references and any required wording. The artwork should be checked against the final mailer dimensions and print method before approval. Do not add a certification mark or disposal statement simply because it appears on another compostable product; use only the mark and wording approved for the selected mailer material.

If returns are part of the customer experience, decide early whether a double-adhesive closure and return instructions belong in the design. The closure is part of the physical mailer specification and needs to be included before production.

Production and delivery timing depends on the confirmed specification, artwork approval, manufacturing schedule, freight method and destination. Treat any required-by date as part of the initial brief so the available options can be assessed before an order is committed.
